Elsewhere, a travel company, is recruiting a Director of Engineering to lead the technical vision of Elsewhere. Looking for a bonafide engineering visionary who can offer strategic insight and develop, execute, and lead all aspects of Elsewhere’s technology. Ideal candidate is a visionary and jack-of-all trades engineer with the ability to deliver as a leader and innovator, software architect, developer, system administrator, and DevOps engineer. Ideally, this candidate will also have some experience in the product realm. The position is based remotely, with the option of coming into the Lonely Planet office in New York City.

What You'll Do

  • Drive Elsewhere’s engineering vision. Develop, execute, and lead all aspects of Elsewhere’s technology.
  • Act as developer, software architect, system administrator, DevOps engineer, and team lead
  • Develop product vision, lead technology strategy, and ensure scalability
  • Design architecture, write software and API documentation, ensure product security, and upgrade and optimize software solutions.
  • Keep track of tech trends. Analyze the competition and suggest technological innovations 
  • Oversee external development teams and outsourced developers

What We're Looking For

  • A visionary with an eye towards the future and consumer-focused approach
  • Skilled developer with strong expertise in programming and software architecture design.
  • Product visionary with the ability to continuously innovate and optimize with cutting-edge technology. 
  • Business expert with a strong understanding of how to scale a marketplace model. 
  • Experience with the following:
    • JavaScript, React, JSOOP, HTML5, CSS3
    • ES5 and ES6 environments
    • Cross-browser/cross-platform development
    • CSS-preprocessors (Stylus/LESS/SASS)
    • Frontend grid systems
    • Gulp/Grunt task runners
    • GIT version control systems
    • Python, Django, OOP, PostgreSQL, Git, REST API, Celery, Docker/Vagrant
    • AWS, Terraforma, Ansible, Docker
  • Ability to analyze the performance of code and debug it.
  • Linux certified.
  • Passionate, naturally curious, and a strong belief in the Elsewhere mission.
