The marketing company will teach poverty courses at Charlotte Catholic High School to educate and encourage involvement among students.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Online marketing company Red Ventures is shifting its focus from websites to world poverty this month. On Thursday, April 22nd and April 29th, Red Ventures employees will deliver poverty curriculum to more than 300 10th grade students at Charlotte Catholic High School. Classes will focus on poverty education and its root causes, and will help students find ways to get involved. The curriculum also includes a course dedicated to current events including the recent earthquakes in Chili and Haiti and how the disasters impact world poverty.
“Red Ventures is passionate about eliminating world poverty and inspiring others to make a difference by raising awareness through education,” said Christy Durbin of Red Ventures. “It’s critical to talk to high school students because their generation can make a difference. We want them to know that eradicating poverty is possible and that their efforts matter.”
The local outreach is part of Lives Linked, Red Ventures’ non-profit organization that works to educate others in an effort to fight poverty. Lives Linked uses advanced technology to strengthen the efforts of humanitarian organizations by giving them a more effective means of communication with people living in poverty. The organization based its poverty curriculum on the Jeffrey Sachs’ book “The End of Poverty.”
Red Ventures employees underwent a “Train the Teachers” seminar to learn the most effective ways to deliver the curriculum to educate students. The company began its educational outreach two years ago and works with student ambassadors from Charlotte Catholic to evolve the curriculum each year. In 2009, Red Ventures employees led five poverty classes for hundreds of students across the Charlotte area.
